Support the oldest and finest public collection of Asian art in Australia. The NGV’s Asian Art Collection has over 6000 works dating from the second millennium BCE to the 21st century. Led by Senior Curator, Wayne Crothers, the Collection reflects the rich diversity of the artistic traditions of Asia and the current artistic, cultural and spiritual links across the region. The NGV has presented many exciting exhibitions such as the 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitions Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality in dialogue with Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape as well as Japanese Modernism, a 2020 exhibition that drew from the NGV Collection.

Support the NGV’s Australian art department. Led by Senior Curator Myles Russell-Cook, this department is responsible for the collection of Australian Art from the time of European settlement to 1980 and this collection is comprised of over 3000 paintings, sculptures and decorative arts objects. Many wonderful exhibitions have been presented at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, such as Hans and Nora Heysen: Two Generations of Australian Art in 2019 and Ivan Durrant: Barrier Draw.

Support the most comprehensive collection of Australian and international contemporary art in Australia. Under the leadership of Director Tony Ellwood AM there has been a reinvigorated and ambitious focus on Contemporary Art at the NGV, underpinned by a significant focus on collecting and acquiring work by leading international artists as well as staging the NGV Triennial every three years. The NGV’s collection of Contemporary Art, led by Senior Curator Ewan McEoin encompasses contemporary art in all its forms and is comprised of a diverse range of global art practice from the 1980s to the present.

Support the first Contemporary Design and Architecture department in an Australian art gallery, led by The Hugh D. T. Williamson Senior Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture, Ewan McEoin. Presenting the cutting edge of design and architecture today this area explores the ways design enriches culture, the economy and society. This department plays a critical role in the delivery of the Triennial which is the first ongoing event of its kind to integrate design and art on a major international scale. Alongside the annual delivery of Melbourne Design Week, Melbourne Art Book Fair and Melbourne Design Fair ensures the NGV is a unique driving force in the Australian design field.

Support the vital work of caring for the NGV Collection to ensure that our treasures can be enjoyed well into the future. The NGV’s world-class conservation team led by Michael Varcoe-Cocks, Associate Director, Conservation, is dedicated to the care and longevity of works of art in all media, including fashion and textiles, photography, frames and sculpture.

Conservation projects range in scale from large to small and include the restoration of Tiepolo’s iconic The Banquet of Cleopatra, 1743–44, to Emil Todt’s exceptionally fragile sculpture of the Victorian Gold Rush, The gold diggers, 1854. Thanks to our supporters, our Conservators have had the opportunity to undertake professional development in Australia and abroad, purchase and maintain analytical equipment, and enable experimental research to develop more effective and efficient preservation programs.

Support the NGV’s International Decorative Arts and Antiquities collection. Led by Senior Curator Amanda Dunsmore this vast collection encompasses Mediterranean and Near Eastern antiquities and British and Continental decorative arts from the 1200s through to 1980, together with American decorative arts of the 20th century.

Led by Senior Curator Katie Somerville, the NGV focuses on representing significant examples of international haute couture as well as Australian fashion with an emphasis on works by Melbourne designers. This department is also supported by The Campbell-Pretty Fashion Research Collection, which gathers together important materials that document the history of fashion.

Support the NGV’s Department of First Nations Art. Led by Senior Curator, Myles Russell-Cook this department is responsible for the collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art and the art of Oceania, Pre-Hispanic America and Africa. The NGV are custodians of the leading collection of Australian Indigenous art in the world. Supporters come together to celebrate this important collection at the First Nations Art Dinner held each year at the NGV. Many wonderful exhibitions have been presented at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, such as Marking Time: Indigenous Art from the NGV as well as DESTINY, the largest retrospective of Destiny Deacon’s career, and TIWI, which celebrates art of the Tiwi people.

Support the NGV’s Prints and Drawings collection. Led by Senior Curator, Cathy Leahy and responsible for over one third of the Gallery’s Collection, it is internationally known for its treasures including outstanding holdings of the work of Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya and William Blake as well as for its repository collection of the prints by Fred Williams. In 2019, the NGV presented Escher X nendo, the groundbreaking exhibition that featured the extraordinary prints of Dutch artist M.C. Escher in dialogue with the work of acclaimed Japanese design studio nendo.
